HIGHLIGHTS
ran's missile strikes targeting US forces in Iraq were a "slap in the face" for Washington, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Wednesday.
There is no clarity yet on whether the strikes caused any casualties at all -- Iranian state TV earlier
claimed as many as 80 American "terrorists" had been killed , but the US has kept mum so far.
AFP reports that the Pentagon is still "working on initial battle damage assessments". Other countries like Poland and Norway have said their personnel were not killed.
Iran's offensive was meant as retaliation for a US drone strike that killed a powerful Iranian commander, Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, last week.
It has now vowed a "crushing response" if the US retaliates after the strikes.
Khamenei said the US should withdraw from the region.
"Military action like this is not sufficient. What is important is ending the corrupting presence of America in the region," Khamenei said.
Iran's offensive has deepened the crisis in the Middle East, and India has asked its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Iraq.
